The time is not right for IPTV to comprehensively promote "Shanghai model"

Reuters Analysys International analysis, from Shanghai Telecom and Shanghai Media Group cooperation IPTV business operations of the "Shanghai model", the comprehensive promotion of the time is not right to promote the three face difficulties.

Analysys International on August 26 - Analysys International, "the second quarter of 2008 quarterly monitoring China's IPTV market" data, the 2008 second quarter total of IPTV subscribers in China reached 1.708 million, of which IPTV users in Shanghai close to 450,000, Accounted for 26 percent overall. Shanghai IPTV development of the good trend, IPTV main reasons for the "Shanghai model" of success. "Shanghai model" by Shanghai Telecom and Shanghai Media Group cooperation IPTV service operators. Shanghai Telecom is mainly responsible for the IPTV network construction, value-added business operations, product sales, and so on; SMG IPTV is mainly responsible for the introduction of audio-visual content, EPG, such as the design work, marketing, "the new TV views" as the main Propaganda points.

Analysys International analysis: Shanghai model is the basis of Shanghai Telecom, Shanghai media and various content providers jointly build healthy industrial chain, win-win cooperation. SMG is rich in audio-visual business class, and Shanghai Telecom has a rich network construction, channel promotion, value-added business operations experience, the "Shanghai model" made full use of Shanghai Telecom and SMG's Advantages, to provide users with a live broadcast , On demand, time-lapse, back at the news, real estate, food, games and other business. However, to the "Shanghai model" to conduct a comprehensive promotion of the three face difficulties:

The first is the cooperation with local radio and television difficult. China Radio fragmentation of the situation around the radio and television decided to circumstances vary. Developed areas of broadcasting, such as Beijing, Nanjing, Shenzhen and other places, the basic conditions for its own good, but also possess the necessary conditions for the network infrastructure, they will be combined with existing resources, and actively explore new digital television to the interactive television business forward, and thus IPTV will face the same form of competition. So will resist IPTV in the region to promote. Following the two cities radio and television, weak economic foundation, and do not have large-scale construction or transformation of the power network, and digital TV to the entire burden brought about by the time also difficult to shake off, and telecommunications to form a strong confrontation. But in view of values and interests of the Suan Putao psychological, although there are some opportunities for cooperation, but be difficult.

Secondly, resources will be facing as a bottleneck. The development of IPTV rely solely on local radio and television operators with limited resources video is not enough, as part of on-demand, live, time-lapse, back, information browsing, games and other media-oriented TV shows, the powerful and rich in content is The key to attracting users.

Third, the spending habits of different geographical differences will be operating on the face challenges. China's vast territory, the consumption power of different geographical, spending habits there are differences in operational planning and operation of the market in Shanghai will certainly be different, need to have local characteristics and meet the spending habits before the market recognition.

In short, the current IPTV in China is still at an early stage of development, the multi-national monitoring system for the impact of the current industry environment, in particular, difficult to break through the constraints of local radio and television, the more difficult to build from benign IPTV industry chain, therefore, IPTV in Shanghai Mode of time is not ripe to promote comprehensive.

Analysys proposed telecom operators: 1, China's national conditions and determine the development of IPTV industry and difficult to separate the road from the radio and television, takes a good grasp of local radio and television with the interests and common prosperity; 2, you can try from the party building, agriculture and other sectors of the Business start and gradually increase the scope of cooperation, 3, learn from the successful model of Shanghai, focusing on IPTV customer base and demand for the breakdown of the excavation, for different customer base to differentiate their products and the development of innovative business models.

Rumor: SARFT CMMB Handsets Fail to Get Network Access Permit

Guangzhou Daily, 8/20/08

A source with a handset manufacturer is claiming that 40,000 TD-SCDMA/CMMB handsets procured by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) along with 1,000 CMMB handsets intended for the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, were denied a network access permits by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), despite passing network access tests performed by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT). China Mobile is covering up that fact that the network access permits were denied, by claiming the handsets in question are still part of commercial trials.

Editor's Note: The move is likely part of a power struggle between the MIIT and SARFT over which mobile phone TV technology will become the national standard. SARFT is heavily pushing its preferred solution CMMB, whereas the MIIT favors the T-MMB standard. China Digital TV and the Internet is the best investment

In the night of August 8 , started four hours of the Olympics opening ceremony, leaving the global audience of 4 billion is endless topic of conversation. According to the television ratings company AGB Nielsen Media survey data show that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony of China set a record high ratings, according to data provided by the CSM, lit the Olympic cauldron moment, the Olympic Games opening ceremony of the national television ratings share climbed 90 Percent, to the opening night audience in the process of the highest points.

In the meantime, the Beijing Olympic Games is also the practice of using high-definition digital television technology to the world for broadcast commitments. According to the plan, the Olympic Games during the opening of the new CCTV HD channels in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao, Guangzhou and other cities on arrival, so 2008 is also considered the first year of terrestrial digital television.

At the same time, Morgan Stanley recently released report shows that in the current market penetration at 10% -50% of the "China Digital TV and the Internet is in the best investment."

Pay channel advertising revenue will exceed

"China is a surplus in the channel, TV channel 3000, of which more than 130 channels of pay, but the content is scarce, so everyone is抢you, and you can have content to influence the media." Attempts have been made since Built cable channels light media CEO Wang Changtian, in an interview with this reporter said.

But at the current stage, in foreign countries has been confirmed that the "content is king" of the law in China seems not so obvious, according to Morgan Stanley's report, China's content producers in the digital pay-TV industry in the chain " Often from very few ": the typical form of income distribution network operators 50:40:10 - with 50 percent, with 40 percent of television programmes are integrated with 10 percent, compared to U.S. cable operators Usually 20-30 percent of income for the purchase of television programmes.

Morgan report, for example, "said Song, Beijing --- Beijing monopoly of cable operators, not only its basic subscription fees under the 70 sets of programming content to pay the cost, but also to content providers to receive" landing fees "."

Therefore, in this case, content producers would prefer to pave the way into high-quality content channels, earn advertising revenue. Statistics show that in 2006 China's TV advertising revenue pay-TV revenue is 90 times.

However, an analyst at Morgan Stanley in view, the current growth rate, this kind of "advertising revenue and subscription television," the imbalance is only temporary, pay-TV in 2006 with revenue growth of 60 percent. " In the next 3-4 years, the average income for each paid channel will be more than the average open channel of advertising revenue, we believe that when content producers will have enough money and power production of high-quality programs to please the pay-TV The audience. "

Digital TV will be the turning point profit

Digital

Show that China's nearly 30 million digital TV users, and is expected to China's digital cable subscribers to the end of 2008 China's TV households will reach 13 percent of the number of viewers in 2009 will exceed the number of Internet users - because of its foundation China's cable TV subscribers and more than twice the number of Internet users.

But at the same time the industry have pointed out that the high rate of duplication of content, allows users to experience the advantages of less than pay-TV, hampering the domestic pay-TV growth. Figures show that China's cable TV household expenditure (APRU) was only 2-3 percent of the United States, under such circumstances, the value of the content industry will be further highlighted.

At the same time, the profitability of digital TV model diversification, have voted in the securities analysts that the digital television may soon will celebrate its earnings inflection point. "The cable television network operators, enterprises, the overall two-way conversion and network transformation is complete, profit model will be a fundamental change, from a simple cable network operators into a comprehensive information service provider." After the whole transfer Era ", pay-TV business, VOD on-demand, digital TV value-added services, information access business, and so on of those operations, will enable cable operators rely on transforming good network, the network continued to make marginal benefit increase, the marginal cost reduction. "

CSM Media Research and General Manager Wang Lan-chu said that "We are pinning hopes on the charges, the traditional TV is not charging this was a problem too long« But even if the charges, income is also limited, imagine if, in the digital TV e-commerce platform can be achieved, perhaps far more than the current size of the profits. "

AGB Nielsen to measure TV audience of Olympics

By Patrick O'Donnell & Hou Xiaoying
China.org.cn correspondents reporting from Beijing

During a press conference Thursday afternoon in Beijing, AGB Nielsen, a leading media research company, discussed their plan to measure the size of the television audience of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Dr. Alberto Colussi, chairman of AGB Nielsen's management board, said that his company will be measuring audiences in 38 countries on five continents.

"Besides our international role, this time we are going for a role here in China," he said.

Colussi said that AGB Nielsen began measuring television audiences in China in 2005, but were restricted to a few major urban areas. He said he helped the company look outside these areas to learn more about the viewing habits of the Chinese countryside.

"Now we are measuring 10 provinces for a total of 660 million people," he said.

According to Colussi, AGB Nielsen gained valuable experience in measuring audience size during the Athens games in 2004 and the Sydney games in 2000.

Instead of providing national data, the company will release data by province. Colussi said it will be interesting to see how the viewing habits of one region of China differ from others.

He said the data gathered from non-urban areas will be especially valuable, as the Chinese countryside has yet to be studied in great detail.

Dr. Alberto Colussi

"If you have only urban data, you have only a little vision, you see only in the city," he said. "You don't see what's around. And that was a limitation."

He believes that China, as the host of the 2008 Olympics, will see a great increase in its domestic television audience.

Colussi also spoke about the nature of investment in the Olympics. He said that sponsorship of the Games is not a commercial investment, but rather a prestige investment. Advertisers and sponsors improve their image by being associated with a major global event.

AGB Nielsen usually sells the data it collects to television stations, so they can set their advertising rates, and to advertising agencies, so they can determine the demographic they are targeting.

However, during the Olympics, Colussi said that AGB Nielsen will release some general data from the Olympics for free, as a way to showcase his company's services. If organizations want more detailed information, such as audience gender and age, they can pay AGB Nielsen to arrange a package.

"This is quite a challenge for our company," he said. "But it is a challenge that we have faced in previous years and we have resolved it successfully."
